Good evening HCS Students, Families and Staff,
I hope everyone had a safe and joyful Fourth of July weekend with family and friends. I am writing regarding the new state-mandated cell phone policy that will go into effect in all New York State public schools beginning this fall. As communicated on June 10, starting in September, students will no longer be permitted to use personal cell phones during instructional hours, including in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and other school spaces.
This policy is part of a statewide effort to support safe, focused learning environments and to promote social-emotional wellness and stronger relationships among students and staff. In compliance with this law, the Honeoye Board of Education must adopt a policy and regulations regarding the use of personal smart devices (e.g., smartphones, smartwatches, tablets) during the school day.
Under this new law, students must:
Refrain from using personal electronic devices anywhere on school grounds during the school day, unless explicitly authorized for educational purposes by a staff member.
Store their personal devices as directed by school staff for the duration of the school day.
We are committed to making sure students, families, and staff understand the policy and have a voice in how it is implemented locally. To that end, we are offering two ways for you to get involved and share your thoughts:
Complete this short, anonymous survey to help us understand the community’s awareness, expectations, and priorities as we develop our policy.
Join us in person for a conversation on Thursday, July 10 at 6:00 PM in the school’s LGI.
Your input will help guide us as we work toward a policy that reflects both the state’s requirements and our school-community’s values. Thank you for your partnership and support as we work together to create the best possible environment for our students.
