Proactive Planning, Virtual ES Open House, and ES Parent Teacher Conferences

October 13, 2020

Good Afternoon,

I hope this note finds you well and enjoying the spectacular fall weather and foliage.  I am reaching out this afternoon with a few updates:

  1. HCS has developed a Continuity of Instruction Short Term Closure Plan. This plan was developed in collaboration with our PreK-12 teaching staff and articulates the steps we will take in the event of a sudden closure due to DOH guidance surrounding confirmed COVID-19 cases and/or contact tracing. Note: We have NO INDICATION that we will need to move to a model of 100% remote learning, we are simply being proactive in the articulation of a plan should we need to do so.  It is my understanding that some elementary PE materials may have been sent home today which were intended to be enclosures in our Elementary level COVID CLOSURE WORK ENVELOPES. Please disregard these materials at this time and “hold” unless we must toggle to 100% remote learning.  All elementary students will receive and bring home a COVID CLOSURE WORK ENVELOPE on Monday, October 19. Upon receipt, please simply hold these materials in a safe place. It is our sincerest hope that we do not NEED to use them, but we prefer to take a proactive approach with planning for delivery of instruction, given we will likely need to be reactive in navigating a short term closure should such a need arise.
  2. The Elementary School plans to host a Virtual Open House for families on or around 11/2.  More information will be forthcoming.
  3. Parent Teacher Conferences at the Elementary School will be virtual this year and will be scheduled for November 20, November 23, November 24. At this juncture we are working with the transportation department on what our half day schedule will look like. More information will be forthcoming from the Elementary School in the coming days.
  4. After much discussion and interfacing with the Department of Health, our elementary teachers are happy that we can once again celebrate student birthdays at school.  There are some new, important guidelines for these celebrations:
    1. Any treats must be purchased at the store. (No delicious home baked goodies.)
    2. All treats must be individually wrapped.
    3. Treats need to be delivered to the school at least 3 days (72 hours) before the celebration date. If treats are not brought in 3 days in advance, the birthday celebration will occur 3 days after the treats arrive.
    4. The classroom teacher will wear gloves to hand out treats to classmates.
    5. If your child already had a birthday this school year, you may still have a celebration.  Simply contact your child’s teacher to schedule an alternate celebration date.

As always, in the event that you have a question(s) or concern(s) that you would like to discuss surrounding our reopening at HCS or otherwise, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you to everyone for their continued patience, understanding, and flexibility throughout this period of uncertainty.  We appreciate your partnership in advocacy for Honeoye students.

Best to you and yours,
E. Bridget Ashton
